When I was single, I used to criticize those parents who would allow their kids to use their smart phones, laptops, etc. I thought this was lazy parenting. Now, I find myself in this situation. My two year old became so enchanted with the bright colored images that I hardly can take my IPhone from his hands. To be honest, sometimes I don't mind him being destructed with a gadget while I attend to my personal matters, but  I feel that this is not the right approach. Is it really necessary to expose small children to talking apps, sliding screens, and all the "charms" that digital media brings? Is there an educational value in all this?

  1. As I am typing, my daughter is getting her dosage of youtube viewing on her ipad, There is a new book that was reviewed on NPR. Written by a techno mom who is concerned about limits. As for me, I ended up putting passcodes on the tvs, ipads, iphones, etc. Otherwise, my daughter is glued to the devices.

I am one who needs the noise, so I have always studied and written my dissertation and books with the TV on. For me it's background noise. But this is not the case for her. So control on my part is critical. But I have to say that youtube has been a wonderful source of language input. And what mother does not need a little break? Especially when grading time comes. Like you, I feel guilty, so moderation is the key. Wait! I have to get the ipad off my daughter's hands! (HAHAAA

  3. Technology has been widely used in the field of education simply because it is faster, easier, and more interesting for learners to learn from. I believe we should use Technology in teaching.
